Blue-grey paper-covered boards.
Gilt embossed title on front cover above a gilt vignette of three steam engines.
Illustrations are by William Middleton (uncredited).
Undated but probably the second or third printing of the first edition, in late 1948 or early 1949.
Advert on p64 lists "Thomas, the Tank Engine" and "James, the Red Engine" as already published, and lists "Tank Engine Thomas Again" as shortly to be published in "Summer of 1949".
Covers worn and scuffed, and the gilt has dimmed.
1cm loss at top of spine strip.
Inner hinges cracked and the stitching has pulled, leaving the binding very loose.
Contents generally clean, but a little finger-worn at the edges.
No significant marks except for a small dealer's stamp on the back pastedown for "Sadler's book shop" in Leeds.
Reading condition.
