Edward Julius Detmold, 1883-1957

Detmold is best known for his illustrations of animals and plants.

He studied animal life in detail at the Zoological Gardens, with his twin brother, Maurice.

Both brothers enjoyed early success, and were elected to the Royal Academy in 1905 at the age of twenty-two.

Maurice committed suicide three years later, but Edward continued working until the mid 1920s, then retired from public life.

His work is characterized by its exactitude, his attention to detail, and for the subtlety of his colour combinations. In this respect, his work ressembles that of the Japanese miniaturists, who may have influenced him.
